NEW PLAYGROUND: Cebu City

Sofia has to try the spa that our friends in Singapore are talking about. So we have to go with her. She promised we’ll only stay 3 days and she paid for our tickets so, why not. I so would like to go home first but an additional 3 days in the Philippines wouldn’t hurt.

I called Cebu City a “new playground” on the post title because this is our first time here. We took Singapore Airlines flight MI566 at 9:00 am but they are actually sharing codes with Silk Air it’s our first time to take Silk Air too. We arrived at Mactan-Cebu International Airport around 1:00pm.

We are staying at the Shangri La Mactan (which is actually in Lap-Lapu City, Mactan Island – 30 minutes to downtown) because this is where the Chi Spa located (as if other Shangri Las don't have it, ha!) AND IT’S NEXT TO THE BEACH! The lobby is great! Huge glass panels overlooking a garden and the staff are polite.

Cebu is an island province in central Philippines and Cebu City (it’s capital) is actually a metro areacities group together to form a huge city. Maybe we will explore the place more in the coming days to see what’s out there. Cebu is where the explorer Ferdinand Magellan first landed and converted the first Filipinos to Christianity – the dominant religion of the Philippines. Unfortunately, he was murdered 20 days later on this island (Mactan). *he should’ve made some friends first, before exploring farther! Ha!*

The architecture around the city bears proof of European influences – like the cathedrals and churches, but modern buildings (comparable to Saigon and Johor Bahru) dominates the skyline. The city is reachable by direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Taipei, Doha, Tokyo and many others.

Cebu City was the host of the 12th ASEAN Summit last January. Proving that this city is joining the big league (in a rush!), whether we like it or not.

I guess this is enough of an introduction for the moment. We’ll feature things and places as we visit and worthy mentioning as our SE Asian “treasures”.

"Maayong hapon bai. Kabalo ka og English? Gigutom ko."

Take that!
