SOUTHEAST ASIA'S Olympic Medals

I am eagerly waiting for my tickets that I ordered for the Opening, Closing (and a handful of events) of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It has been deducted on my credit cards so I guess I'd be expecting it soon. I had to use some connection in Mainland China so I can order domestically which they started selling last April 15.

Why am I so into this anyway? Which made me thinking --how's our SE Asian athletes doing (or have done) throughout the history of the Olympics? We comprise 10% of the world population and I guess we did well. OR HAVE WE?

I did some research and look what I found...

SE Asia's Medals in the Entire History
of the Modern Olympics

*start of rant* Nope, it isn't a tally of 1 Olympic Games. It's the entire goddam modern Olympic history from 1896 - 2004! Imagine that?! It's a miserable total of 51 medals! Only 51 medals for christssake, would you believe?! After more than a hundred years?! Goddammit! -- Japan can get 54 medals in one Olympics (1968 Mexico City)! What in the world do we go there for? Sashay our way to the stadium and shashay our way out??? -- and that's it? Ha!

If we send more athletes THAN those goddam sports officials, we would have more chances of getting a friggin' medal! We send more balding officials than athletes, for christssake! Those officials are just in there for the free tour anyway! Fucken free-rider idiots! Let more athletes go to the Olympics. Enough of those officials and their ugly wives! Ha! There! Take that! *end of rant*

The Philippines gave us our first ever medal in the 1932 Los Angeles Games and it's a BRONZE! And not just one -- but 3! Not bad, not bad at all.

Our first ever SILVER was given to us by Singapore from the 1960 Rome Games. And ever since, they haven't got any other medal at all till this day.

Indonesia gave us our first ever GOLD in the 1992 Barcelona Games and they brought not 1 -- but 2! Excellent Indonesia, excellent!

The most prolific medal earner is... hold your breath...Thailand! (Yahooo!) Eight (8)medals from the 2004 Athens Games -- 3 Golds, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze.

Indonesia has been bringing home golds since 1992 from 4 consecutive Olympiads. Thailand has been winning golds since 1996 from 3 consecutive Olympics. Fucken lovely! Simply fucken lovely!

****

I just hope we'll do better in Beijing.

Goodluck to our athletes and to hell with the
free-riding, parasitic, opportunistic officials who's
just on it for the free tour! Ha!

Keep taking that, baby. Keep taking THAT!

I'm sure China will try its best to outdo all the other countries that hosted the Olympics. The Olympics is going to be her "coming out" party as it strives to join the league of advanced nations. I'm happy to know Thailand also has plans of bidding to host the Olympics. Competition is fierce but given Thailand's rich history and strong sporting culture, I'm sure she has a great chance of winning the bid.

Sawasdee Pogi...thanks for all the comments. I don't know if you are new here or you have been reading our blog for a long time now.

Whatever's the case, we would like you to know that it is always appreciated and always welcome. Mabuhay si Pogi! :-)

BTW, for those who don't know..."Pogi" means handsome in Filipno. Just like "หล่อ" (law) in Thai.

The sad fact is that Indonesia's sporting scene is currently at an all-time low. We used to do so much better in the past (establishing ourselves as Southeast Asia's sporting superpower, primarily backed by the fact that we have the most population), but nowadays, we're losing to our region's new sporting superpower, Thailand. I just hope we can keep on bringing gold in the Olympic games. Even though we have brought the most medals in the region, but I think Thailand is more impressive since they nabbed 3 golds in Athens! That's fantastic!! But we won't lose out, so watch out, Thailand!

SEA's first Olympic medal was won by Filipino athlete Teofilo Yldefonso in Amsterdam 1928 (Swimming 200m breaststroke Men).

Thanks for that input, Filipinayzd. I'll check on that.

These datas (and almost all of BISEAN datas) are provided by government information agencies in our region.

We base our blog posts on information they provide us.

I think you need to inform your local information agency about Mr. Ydelfonso. But BISEAN will make our efforts to make him known too.

I took a little peek on your blog. Saw some interesting stuffs there. I'll go back on my free time.

Thanks again for the first comment!

Mabuhay ang Pilipinas. Mabuhay ang Timog Silangang Asya!

Brilliant!

if i'm not mistaken, there used to be a filipina who won a gold in swimming but she's playing for the united states so... yeah...

bong coo won a gold back then in bowling, south korea olympics but bowling wasn't included as an offcial olympic sport back then...

anyways, i wish the olympics will be fair this time unlike the 1996 atlanta olympics where our boxer velasco should've won the gold...

it's really not up to the sports official. the athletes should pass the qualifying rounds first. if they did, then they will be in olympics but if they didn't pass you should know...

If only there we have a Miss Olympics event.

Hi Rothima, thanks for coming back! We are not in Beijing any longer but we'll try to get some feeds from there. Thanks!

I thoughts Singapore won a bronze, not a silver in running? Singapore has also recently won silver in table tennis. We are so proud! Singapore has also won the right to the first ever Youth Olympics Games, affectionatey named YOG by the Singaporeans! Make sure to come!
