for Miss Universe 1969, Gloria Diaz, they say that though the United States conquered the moon, the Philippines conquered the universe! her smart witty response of how she'll entertain an astronaut who lands in her home town won her the crown!

I love this post, Sofia baby.

I'll post a follow up question:

"What do these 4 classic women have in common for bagging the crown?"

I say, we sent them when they were still YOUNG -- Apasra at 17, Gloria at 18, Margarita at 19 and Portip at 19 as well.

Nowadays, we keep sending 20+ girls. Too old already.

**If Gloria is still 18 today...I'll marry her in a wink.

Venezuela just won as Miss Universe, 4 out of the 5 finalists are Latinas... Hmm, we forget there are Latina-Asians among us. The 2 Filipina Miss Universe's were practically Latinas: Margarita Moran is 75% of Spanish lineage, Gloria Diaz, 1/6 Spanish. 30% of the Filipinos trace something Spanish in their bloodline(however diluted the Spanish component may be now), as indicated by the one & only racial census conducted in the Philippines in the late 1800's.

I'm happy for Venezuela, we may be of different countries but we belong to the same Family

Enhorabuena, chica

kaya ibang iba talaga ang mga filipinos.
sayang.. next year na lang!

there are still many Spanish mestizas in Manila but they belong to prominent families, they may consider it below them to participate in the usual beauty contests. I wonder if we canjust choose one among them & not to make them undergo the usual "degrading" obstacle courses

Law of the averages. Most of the crowns of Miss Universe were won by Latinas & we have plenty of those so why should we not just send our mestizas. The few times we sent mestizas we won

Of course, all the European permutations aside from Spanish are in the Philippines: we sent a Fil-Danish (Anna ALorraine Kier), a Fil-Greek (Nina Ricci Alagao),then the American mestizas (Anglos) then the pure Asians, but it seems only the Latina Pinays can do the trick

Is it obvious what is really the favorite beauty type of the world?
HE HE HE MY Grandmother's & MOTHER'S TYPE- Latina...

Anonymous said...

Is it really natural for Ms. Apasra? having a 20 year old face at the age of 60!!!

Nayr...

True Spanish's the predominant European component in the Filipino bloodline but we forgot that just like in Latin America, all kinds of Europeans were encouraged to settle here, even in the 1700's. My ancestry is Spanish, Swiss (French), White Russian, German (from Hamburg), I'm only 1/6th Asian but my ancestors have lived here for centuries. I'm always mistaken as a foreigner (blonde, green eyes) because all these so-called nationalistic stuff in the mass media has brainwashed Filipinos lately to believe they should look only like Asians when 1/3 of Filipinos remember having a European grandmother or grandfather. The next time you see a European-looking family in Greenbelt, Rockwell, Greenhills or Fort, don't automatically assume they're tourists, they most probably be Filipino (tourists generally stay in Malate). A big part of the mestizo population could be best called White because only a great great grandmother is probably Asian, the succeeding children married only mestizos or Whites (the American soldiers married the rich mestizas during the American occupation, & there was a second wave of Europeans-mostly German & Spanish Basques- during that time; many Japanese migration too, but that's beside the point ).

As for the White Russians, all the 8,000 White Russians who took refuge in Shanghai against the Tsar relocated to the Philipppines when the Communists took over. They probably number 100,000 now & they are scattered in the Visayas so Filipinos aren't aware of them mostly. They intermarried with some of the mestizo hacenderos so when you see blondes lounging in some beaches there, don't presume they're tourists & fleece them.

Indonesia threw out its Eurasian Indos after independence but it's now going ga-ga over its few Eurasians like Nicholas Saputra. Thailand is proud of not having been colonized by any Europen power but as I read here somewhere, 40% of its models are already Eurasians. Even self-possedsed society like Japan (Ken Hirai, Eiji Wentz) & Korea (Daniel ani) are parading their Eurasians. While the Philippines with a big White-Eurasian population (which number in millions not thousands) has been busy indigenising itself. True, there are Eurasians in the entertainment industry but they are far-outnumbered now by the Asian types, belying that Wikipedia claim that Eurasians predominate in the industry (there was a wrong entry there as well, that the acclaim of Filipinos on the European phenotype isn't necessarily because of colonial mindset. All the races in the Philippines are present in sufficient numbers so they have a clear field to appreciate who really looks good. Most remember that pretty European grandmother so they don't become blindly biased to Asian types just because they live in Asia. The spread of Spanish blood is not through rape as claimed by so-called nationalists (who more often than not are really only envious because how is it un-nationalistic if you love your country though you may look like Brad Pitt?). The spread of European blood is through the querida system, now still very rampant. A Spanish/European don could have 5 local "queridas" with 10 children each so he could've produce 50 mestizos theoretically, all children given a big share in the properties). Most resent the fact that as you go up the alta sociedad (high society), it looks more European. They can solve that like what the new rising Chinese-Filipino tai pans are doing , they marry European (Uytengsu, Sy). In the Philippines, it's not enough you're rich, you should look right. Or you're forever be a social climber though you have billions.

I guess Filipinos could be White, mestizo or Asian. When 1/3 of your population is of European lineage, you can't pretend only 2/3 represent your self-image.

Latina is not a race, it is an ethnicity denoting someone from Latin America whose native language is Spanish. The blacks and mulattos of Cuba, puerto Rico and Dominican Republic are latino just as the amerindian mestizos of Mexico and the white Italians of Argentina are Latino. The origin of the world "Latino" comes from the word Ladino, a label the Spaniards gave to their native subjects who have come to have Spanish as their mother tongue. Anyways, latinos are so mixed today that in the same family---one sister looks indian, the other pure spaniard, and the other black. As a side note, Spaniards are not considered Latino; they are white Europeans. They would be offended if you called them that----as the majority of maids, laborers, etc. who come to work in Spain are latinos or who the Spaniards derogatorily call "sudacas".

I still believe that Filipinas who are at least 80% of Malay stock should be sent - case in point, Miriam Qiambao who nearly won in 1999. Why must mestizas or latinas always win? It is ever so unfair. They should just create a Ms. Universe pageant for Latinas and another for Asians for a level playing field.

Porntip? I laugh when i read it first time.

we Filipino should pursue Pure Filipina or at least filipina descent in a world beauty pageant!
