How the Queenly Miss Philippines Lost the Chance

Our fellow Oriental beauty power house, the Philippines sent a very queenly delegate to the Miss Universe this year. Everybody was saying, 'Oh shoots! Asia will bag it this year.' But...

The 5 FINALISTS are:

Miss Mexico, Miss Australia, Miss Jamaica, Miss Ukraine and Miss Philippines.

Yes! The dreaded final question! They have 30 seconds to answer. Here are their questions and excerpts from their answers.

Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete: What effect is unsupervised Internet use having on today's youth? Through an interpreter, she says the Internet is an "indispensable, necessary tool" and we have to make sure kids are using it according to family values.

Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell: What role should the government play in regulating potentially offensive clothing? "One of the greatest things we have is the freedom of choice...I don't think the government should have any say in what we wear."

Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps: Is the death penalty acceptable and why? "I believe that life is a gift...I believe that none of us as humans have the right to take a life."

Miss Ukraine Anna Poslavska: How do you feel about full-body scanners in airports? Through an interpreter, she says, "I think it's a very important question of security...if that helps us to save the lives of people, then I'm for it."

Miss Philippines Venus Raj: What is one big mistake you've made and what did you do to make it right? She says she hasn't made any major mistakes, then gives a shout-out to her family. "Thank you so much that I am here."

OK, that was the worst answer of the bunch.

Judgment time.

Fourth runner-up: Miss Philippines
Third runner-up: Miss Ukraine
Second runner-up: Miss Australia
First runner-up: Miss Jamaica

Winner: Miss Mexico!

Mexico and Philippines was neck-and-neck in swimsuit and evening gown. It is very obvious the organizers wanted Philippines to win or be in the Top 5. So, the easiest personal question was asked.

All they were asking for was HONESTY. An honest and transparent Miss Universe.

Tania Lim, 23, Singapore
Fonthip Watcharatrakul ฝนทิพย์ วัชรตระกูล, 20, Samut Prakan

Please note that none of our girls look anything like the day they left their countries for the pageant. Why do they have to alter their looks? Anyways...

Good luck, girls! Bring home the pearls. Ooops! I forgot, they changed the crown into a cheap-looking rhinestone tiara. Ok, bring home the rhinestones!!! Go, go, go!!

Southeast Asian MISS UNIVERSES:
How Do They Look Nowadays?

Our region has 4 Miss Universes so far.
The last one was crowned 20 years ago.
They were the World's most beautiful women of their time.

Have you ever wondered how they look nowadays?

See 'em here...

Apasra Hongsakula อาภัสรา หงสกุล, Thailand
Miss Universe 1965 crowned in Miami Beach

Southeast Asia’s FIRST Miss Universe. It is said that Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand herself gave personal tips to Apasra how to pose like a queen in the pageant. She’s now a Cultural Ambassador, President of Raymond Weil and a spa magnate at the age of 60.

Gloria Diaz, Philippines
Miss Universe 1969 crowned in Miami Beach

She is now a well-respected film actor at the age of 58.

Maria Margarita Moran, Philippines
Miss Universe 1973 crowned in Athens

She’s a businesswoman now (owns Pearl Farm Resort) and 53 years old.

Porntip Nakhirunkanok ภรณ์ทิพย์ นาคหิรัญกนก ไซม่อนม Thailand

WHO WILL GIVE US OUR 5TH CROWN?

It has been 20 years since our last Miss Universe was crowned – it was Porntip from Thailand in 1988.

Our very first Miss Universe crown was in 1965 won by Apasra, also from Thailand.

Southeast Asia has a total of 4 Miss Universes. Between Apasra and Porntip, there were Gloria in 1969 and Margarita in 1973 – both from the Philippines. (what lovely names!)

Yes, there were finalists and runners-up in between butc’mon sweetie, this is not a contest of 2nd bests, is it?

Anyways…although another Oriental Miss Universe as a successor this year would be almost a miracle, I can’t help to wonder...

Who will give us our 5th MU crown?...

You want a fearless prediction? –

None of ‘em.

Two of ‘em would place as a semi-finalist but only one
would go on to be a finalist. But that’s it.

No crown for us this year.

But I wish ‘em all the best of luck. They all need it.

OUR GIRLS IN THE MISS UNIVERSE 2008

It’s going to be pageant fever again in a few weeks…

For those who are taking it so seriously, it’s gonna be an exciting-ultra-fabulous event which would give “honor, glory and economic prosperity” to their country. *sure*

And for those who are so-and-so, well in the case of us Biseaners, it’s gonna be just another chance to make money on bet.com

The Miss Universe 2008 will be held in our turf (again!)Nha Trang City in Vietnam. And for some reason, they pronounce it as /'na 'charng/.

Come 14 July, over a billion people would have their eyes glued on telly hearing the words “Miss”, “finalists”, “Vietnam” over and over again for 2 hours.

Here are our girls in this “auspicious” event… *lolrtf*

All the best to our girls! Make us proud!
