THE WORLD’S TALLEST AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWERS

Air Traffic Control (ATC) is very important in aviation. They monitor, direct, set paces and organize the flow of airborne planes mainly to prevent collisions. *yikes!*

People in the Control Room ALSO make sure that the pilots are AWAKE! *waaah!* -- that is, if the Chief Purser is busy serving drinks.

Other functions includes monitoring and queue-ing aircrafts taxiing around the airport grounds, again, to prevent collisions and make sure there's actually a pilot on the dang plane! *lol*

BISEAN is still in the process of listing (and sorting) the heights of ATC towers in the region but most of our airports doesn’t wanna give out infos. *then we’ll get it from somewhere else! ha!*

Two (2) of the World’s Tallest ATC Tower is in Southeast Asia…and we got the top slots!

1. Suvarnabhumi Airport (ท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ) ATC Tower at 132.2m (434ft) in Bangkok, Thailand.

It is the world’s tallest free-standing ATC tower.

2. Kuala Lumpur International Airport ATC Tower at 120m (394ft) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This used to be the World's tallest before Suvarnabhumi opened in 2006.

3-10. List to be completed soon.

that one from KLIA looked like menara to me.

@ Matthew...I think you're referring to Menara KL which looks similar to KLIA Tower. But if you look at it closely, it's not quite the same. See BISEAN's previous post on Menara KL (KL Tower).

@ Curbside...LOL. Suvarnabhumi isn't quite a mouthful. Not a lot of people know it is pronounced as "soo-war-na-poom".

@ Eyron...hey, dude! Long time no hear from you! Have you started your own blog yet? Well, it's about time. We wanna know bits of you and hear what you have to say about things. Eagerly waiting. =)

I just love the Suvarnabhumi tower. It's about time they radically change the design of aircraft control towers from the usual type (think Changi) to this type of sleek, modern ones.

Changi is a wonderful airport, and many consider its control tower as an iconic landmark of Singapore (even featured in souvenirs like wallscrolls, calendars, box of chocolates, etc), but I think it's very, very unpleasant-looking. It's very seventies. GOD knows they have the money to build a new one - I don't know why they insist on holding on to that one.

Changi is IMHO the best, most effective and comfy airport in the world, but in Southeast Asia, nothing could beat the facade of Suvarnabhumi - it's just so spectacular. The inside of the airport is another subject, though (sorry, not a big fan. I especially detest the COLD, HARD seats. heehee).

Singapore Changi really needs to reconsider about their facade, since it's such a wonderful airport. They need iconic facade as well.

That said, I think the most balanced airport in S.E.A. is the KLIA because it looks cool both from the outside and inside, and it's functioning very well, too.

Worst one would be CGK (Soekarno-Hatta). Hahahaha. I don't know, I think it's prehistoric. Jakarta is one of the centers of commerce in Asia, and is definitely an important hub - I think we deserve a better airport. Westerners seem to like it, though - lots of westerners I know even prefer the CGK to Suvarnabhumi because our airport is more 'traditional-looking'. Whatever. I just hope our currently-constructing Terminal 3 would be more modern looking.

Side note: Apparently, the Indonesian airport authority has forked out USD 5 million to completely refurbish the toilets in CGK - good news for me, I can finally pee to my heart's content in CGK (the toilets there used to be infamously UNBEARABLE - even worst than the old Don Muang)
